VIDEO: Tulane Students Want Larger Police Presence

Tulane students are joining the chorus lashing out against crime in New Orleans. With other campaigns holding down the murder rate, students on the Uptown campus are focusing on their own backyard. In a new video linked to the "It's Not Enough" Campaign (and on view after the jump), collegiates urge President Scott Cowen to bolster the TUPD police presence in the Uptown neighborhoods surrounding campus.

University-area muggings have been reported at a steady clip in recent months.

Here's the video:

It's Not Enough NOLA from Lula Fotis on Vimeo.

The campaign's statement is as follows:

"As Tulane students, have been conditioned to operate in an atmosphere of fear at Tulane. We are tired of being stranded in bars because we cannot walk home alone, although thinking that having somebody with you when your attacker has a gun is a false idea of protection. We are tired of the two block walk home from class after dark becomes a gauntlet. We are tired of hearing about another mugging, robbery, rape, assault, or beating a block away from our houses."

The group also has a petition.

You kids make me laugh. You

You kids make me laugh.
You have two choices: grow up or get out of new orleans.

WTUL News and Views sat "It's Not Enough" down with the Tulane students of SOAR (students organizing against racism) and here is the conversation that ensued.

http://neworleans.indymedia.org/news/2012/01/16527.php

There is a recent history of TUPD painting all rape on campus as "from off-campus," for the benefit of the parents and alumni. The sad reality is that most rape is student on student.

As for Crime, MARI
http://maplearearesidents.net/index.htm

got a security district barely passed by a 50% vote (the security detail is funded by a mil on property taxes).

These security districts and private security details are targeted as the "aorta of corruption" for NOPD by the FBI.

Personally, i'm wondering when people will think enough police IS enough, because Tulane is a "Fort Knox" within the New Orleans area. Perhaps folks will reconsider 'more police' as a solution? Perhaps people can protect themselves, rather than rely on a very flawed institution to do an impossible job for them?

...But I don't live in the

...But I don't live in the Marigny. And did you really THINK that would be safe? PS: Many of these people were sober when they were victimized. (The guy who was carjacked at gun point while taking out his trash at 5PM.)

I'm 5' 4" and 120 pounds and

I'm 5' 4" and 120 pounds and a white male. I am not a Tulane student, yet I work literally right off campus. I have to walk a mile to and from my job and I go to college in mid city. I usually get off work at midnight and walk home. Also to get the school I have to walk up broadway through neighborhoods between Walmsley and Washington (something I'm sure some of you Tulane students would never imagine doing in your entire life, ew.) My favorite neighborhood to go out at night in this city is the Marigny and By-water, and I do think it sucks that some of the best nightlife in the city is in an area riddled with crime. I do not have a car, my community college costs less than 1,200 a semester, and I do not feel under privileged. I am 24 I've lived here all my life. If you do not feel like you already have a sufficient police force, then you are failing to realize that you are not the center of attention to a city that is littered with violent crime. Besides all the money it takes to get a Tulane education, another thing you should take out of your college experience is growing up and self sufficiency. Learn common sense. You are not stranded in a bar, you have a private bus system. It is common sense to watch your back and continue to be alert. Sure I do not always feel entirely safe, but I do what I can to protect myself in a city where anything can happen. I am not trying to be too hard on Tulane students, as some of my closest friends are graduates of the university. (A funny thing too, they all ended up moving into the Marigny or another murder capital like Chicago.) However, the best way to fight crime is to spread awareness and do research at what is fueling it and personally taking action of either arming yourself with pepper spray, NOT being alone at a bar, or taking the bus. The improper way to do it is to up the already large police force creating a bigger gap between you (already having an image of elitism, disassociation, and apathy for other peoples problems) and the city YOU chose to live in. Obviously, I think any crime is terrible and I have been a victim and witness of it. Stay safe students.

Unless you are an

Unless you are an upperclassman at Tulane you shouldn't be in a bar. Minimum drinking age is 21 and most underclassmen aren't of legal age. Stay at home and study instead of getting illegally drunk and stumbling home. Tulane University is one of the few universities that have officers patrolling the neighborhood. Tulane also offers a age ride program that transports students from one place to another. ... But if you can afford to go out drinking you should be able to afford a cab ride home. Robbers prey on the intoxicated. Be smart and maybe it won't happen to you.

suck it up

suck it up

Yeah, I don't feel safe after

Yeah, I don't feel safe after dark in the freakin' Marigny.

Do you think Tulane can do something about that, too?

What. Ever.
